This work has a compelling quality. A woman looks toward
the left of the canvas, offering her profile to the viewer. Her
attitude is suggestive of one who watches. Variations of grey
bring Persephone’s face into focus. The eye rests there, seeing
hope or longing, sorrow or betrayal. The power of her features
combines with the subtle darkness of the canvas to create a
thought-provoking piece that embodies passion and soulfulness.
This original painting is inspired by the myth of Persephone,
Queen of the Underworld. Roman mythology portrays
Persephone as the goddess of fertility and the queen of the underworld.
She is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter who was seized by Pluto
and held captive in his underworld. Though Demeter eventually
persuaded the gods to let her daughter return to her, Persephone
was required to remain in the underworld for four months of each
year because Pluto had tricked her into eating a pomegranate
while she was there. Whenever Persephone left the earth, the flowers
withered and the grain died, but when she returned, life blossomed
anew. This story, which symbolizes the annual vegetation cycle, was
celebrated in the Eleusinian Mysteries, in which Persephone appeared
under the name Kore.
