Kleinsteuber is well known for portraits in which a photo-transfer technique is used, along with charcoal and often bright colours, giving her work a pop art feel. The subject matter of Kleinsteuber’s painting take on a form that is both confrontational and seductive. These portraits are sexy and unapologetic. “I want to push the edges and blur the lines of what society deems as acceptable and tolerable. My personal focus has been to explore the notion of sexuality, that of my own and others. Hense, it becomes a focus that translates into my art practice. I’d like to harness ‘the wandering eye’ and dare viewers to examine their biases and to promote the enjoyment of looking. Looking is complicated of course, but it should be pleasurable. And art is… afterall, about looking. Kleinsteuber’s painting fill the homes of many collectors, worldwide.

The artist, J Kleinsteuber (Canadian) graduate of Emily Carr Institute (now University) of Art & Design, has established an art practice based on the development of a series of portraits ranging in size from 3″ x 3″ to 84″ x 60″. Themes of her work are based on popular culture, identity and fashion.
Kleinsteuber works with photographs both, from her private collection, and images collected from popular magazines such as The Rolling Stone and Italian Vogue. These images are then enlarged, sometimes as much as 800%, a transfer is made using acrylic medium and the 11″ x 17″ sheets are places on canvas, much like pieces of a puzzle. She then goes into the piece with different charcoals and paints to make the portrait come to life. They take on a dynamism and energy that is so prevalent in Kleinsteuber’s work.
